San Miguel High School is one of 10 schools selected as a 2010 MetLife Foundation Breakthrough School. This two-year-old program seeks to identify, recognize, and showcase middle level and high schools serving large numbers of students living in poverty, and are high achieving or dramatically improving student achievement.

Brother Nick Gonzalez, principal of San Miguel, will receive a $5,000 grant from the MetLife Foundation and participate in events and programs put on by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, including its convention in March in Phoenix. The association is responsible for selecting the breakthrough schools.

Selection criteria are based on a school’s documented success in implementing strategies aligned with three core areas — collaborative leadership, personalization and curriculum, instruction and assessment — that have led to improved student achievement.
