That’s what a depot is for

The Tucson INSIDER: Insights and trends on developing and ongoing Tucson regional business news.

Most often when Tucsonans talk about the Historic Depot downtown the conversation is about whether its renovation was a success.

We forget that at its core, the depot is a train station. So we took pause last week when a Pew research study found that the train that comes through Tucson, the Sunset Limited, is the most subsidized train in the Amtrak system. All but three of Amtrak’s 44 lines lost money last year and were subsidized to an average of $32 per passenger but the Sunset Limited, which runs from Los Angeles to New Orleans, was subsidized to the tune of $462 for each of the 72,000 passengers it carried.
