Forest Service allowed to reject Rosemont Mine

Corrected as of Nov. 3

The Coronado National Forest may issue a "no action" decision on the proposed Rosemont Copper Mine in the Santa Rita Mountains, but that determination would be made from a review process following the specific requirements of the National Environment Policy Act.

It would be a first for the U.S. Forest Service to issue a "no action" recommendation, which could block development of the mine.

Heidi Schewel, of the Coronado National Forest, said the Forest Service is examining both the proposed mine and a no alternative action.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, whose department oversees the Forest Service, which is considering the Rosemont Mine proposal, said in an Oct. 23 letter to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., that no decisions have been made on the mine.
