Starr Pass gets new executive chef

New Hires

Mike Rogers joined GLHN Architects & Engineers Inc. as a mechanical designer. Rogers has more than 10 years of design experience in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and industrial ventilation systems. He previously served as mechanical designer on the Discovery Channel Telescope project currently under construction at Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff.

Chris Brown is the new executive chef for the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa. Brown has more than 13 years of major resort and hotel experience. Prior to coming to Starr Pass, Brown served for three years as the Executive Banquet Chef at Marriott World Center Resort in Orlando, which operates largest banquet kitchen in the Marriott family.

Michael Strauss is now a senior manager with H & R Block Tax and Business Services. He previously ran his own CPA practice for 18 years. His new office is at 1331 N. Wilmot, Suite 101.

Andrea Chavez joined Tucci Creative as marketing coordinator. She spent the last few years working with national advertising agencies in Burbank, Calif. She also worked in guest relations on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and “Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Dr. Jordan Smith joined University Physicians Healthcare and the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as an assistant professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery. Smith recently returned from Germany where he received additional training in computer assisted surgery.

Awards, honors, and recognitions

Dr. James Cunningham, a social epidemiologist in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, received the Canada-Mexico Joint Award in North American Studies from the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. He will work with colleagues at the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico and the University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada to evaluate the impacts of methamphetamine precursor chemical laws recently implemented by the two countries.

Jeff Burgess, a professor in the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, has been awarded $2.3 million for two national research grants to study and prevent injuries among firefighters. Burgess, director of the college’s Division of Community, Environment and Policy, has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to conduct a three-year international comparison of fireground injuries and standard operating guidelines among fire departments in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Additionally, he received a $1.3 million grant from the National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health, a division of the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.  The money will be used to conduct a four-year study to evaluate the effectiveness of a risk management approach to reduce injuries among Tucson Fire Department firefighters.

Elections

Lowell E. Thomas, a partner of Snell & Wilmer L.L.P., was re-elected to the board of directors of the Canada Arizona Business Council. Thomas is currently serving his sixth year on the Board. The Canada Arizona Business Council promotes business, investment and bilateral trade between Arizona and Canada, and the Board includes many successful and influential Canadian business leaders living in Arizona and Canada.

The Tucson Commercial Real Estate Women selected its board of directors for 2010. Those elected as executives include: Andria Burke, president; Jane McCollum, president elect; Sandy Jackson, treasurer; Farrah Kay, secretary; and Eileen Lewis, past president. Elected directors include: Beth Haas, Janine Irvin, Michelle Jolly, Jackie McGuire, Linda McNulty, Joan Mountain and Loretta Peto.
