At long last, dirt flies on Nogales port

This Week’s Good News

Published on Friday, October 23, 2009

A groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 22 means long overdue work is getting underway on the $213 million project to expand the Mariposa Port of Entry at Nogales, the nation’s third busiest border station.

An integral part of the infrastructure for international trade and part of the Canadian-American-Mexican (Canamex) trade corridor, the 36 year-old facility has been in need of expansion for almost 26 years. Built to handle about 400 trucks a day, it now sees as many as 1,400 a day during peak produce season from January to March.

The expansion project is expected to be completed in 2013. Federal stimulus money totalling $199.4 million will be used on the project. That’s nearly two-thirds of the $300 million in stimlulus money being spent to improve border land crossings
