An all-star assembly of Tucson’s top jazz musicians will perform a “Super Jam Tribute to Steve Emerine” Oct. 18 to cap off this summer’s Jazz Under the Stars series at St. Philip’s Plaza, 4280 N. Campbell Ave. at the southeast corner of River Road.

Emerine, whose political column appeared weekly on the pages of Inside Tucson Business until he died in February, was a lifetime supporter of jazz, twice serving as board president of the Tucson Jazz Society.

The SuperJam Tribute is being produced by Pete Swan and will feature jazz musicians including Jeff Haskell, Julie Anne, Scott Black, Eleanor Winston, Brice Winston, Arthur Statman and Jack Wood.

The Emerine tribute is being sponsored by the Southern Arizona chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Slow Food at 17th Street

The Tucson chapter of Slow Food is partnering with 17th Street Market to offer international cooking classes on Nov. 8.

Slow Food is an organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating food traditions.

The classes take place at the market at 11:30 am with Chef Donald Yap of Neo Malaka and Chef Ryan Jarrell of Vila Thai.  Participants will gather ingredients from the market which will then be used in the cooking demonstration. After class, lunch will be served.

The fee for the cooking class and lunch is $50, or $40 for members of Slow Food, and participants get copies of all the recipes demonstrated as well as a 10 percent discount from 17th Street Market on purchases made that tday. Space is limited and reservations can be made online at the Slow Food website: www.slowfoodtucson.org .

Philanthropic phlavor

It’s October and in addition to the phenomenal weather, “Philanthropy with Phlavor” is back at Pastiche. All month month, Pastiche will donate 5 percent of your check to the charity of your choice. Whether you dine-in or take-out, you’ll not only enjoy a great meal, but simultaneously support your favorite nonprofit – and we all know there are lots of them that could use the support.

And the winner is...

The Tucson Culinary Festival wrapped up four glorious — and gluttonous — days of food and drink. For the first time, the same restaurant won both the peoples choice and the judges choice in the Milagro Tequila World Margarita Championship. And that restaurant is Jax Kitchen with its summer margarita made with fresh juices, orange and basil granita.

The festival also had its Copper Chef Challenge with defending champion Jim Murphy, of Kingfisher Bar and Grill and Blue Fin Seafood Bistro, keeping his title from challenger Jeff Fuld of Elle, a Wine Country Restaurant. The secret ingredient was tomatoes.

Congratulations to the winners and hats off to the Tucson Originals and the Tucson Culinary Foundation for putting such a terrific event that highlights the vast culinary talent we have here in Tucson.
