New Hires

Heather Reed, MD
, and Celia Valenzuela, MD, joined the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Both have also joined University Physicians Healthcare. Reed is an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology. She is developing the use of simulation technologies to improve the quality of health-care education. Valenzuela has also been named an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology. Her interests include minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Dan Joseph joined Grubb & Ellis Company as an associate. Joseph is a member of the company’s Industrial Group and will specialize in industrial sales and leasing in Tucson, with an emphasis in high-tech manufacturing and production real estate. Prior to joining Grubb & Ellis, he spent much of his career leading high tech manufacturing companies and the past seven years as an entrepreneur, assisting and advising the start up of early-staged companies.

Stephen T. Portell joined the office of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McNally, P.L.C., practicing in automotive and heavy equipment product liability litigation, drug/medical device litigation, insurance coverage litigation, class action litigation and business litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Portell was an equity partner with Quarles & Brady, LLP and an associate with Snell & Wilmer, LLP.

Awards, honors, and recognitions

David B. Goldstein was selected as one of Arizona’s Finest Lawyers. Goldstein practices consumer bankruptcy law, he also represents the State of Arizona in antitrust class actions through the Arizona Attorney General’s Antitrust Division. Boris Kozolchyk was selected by the U.S. Department of State to be the U.S. delegate and expert member to the Organization of American States (OAS) Specialized Conference in Washington, D.C. earlier in the month. Kozolchyk is Evo DeConcini Professor of Law at the University of Arizona and heads the Tucson-based National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade.

Amanda Bailey was one of 18 students that received part of $34,000 in awards from Arizona State Credit Union through its Community Leaders Scholarship and the Loan Reduction Grant program. The grants will either help pay for tuition, books and other academic expenses or can be used to pay down loans the students had to incur. Bailey was the only student from Tucson and the University of Arizona.

Appointments

Craig L. Sumberg
is the new development director of the Fox Tucson Theatre. Sumberg primary responsibility will be to raise money to ensure the Fox Theatre’s operations continue. Previously, he served as the senior vice president for resource development for the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona.

Robert S. Green is the new president and CEO of the Arizona BioIndustry Association. Green has been involved with biotechnology companies in Tucson since 1989 and most recently he sold his company, Integrated Biomolecule Corp. to Ventana Medical Systems/Roche Group in 2008. Green has served on the boards of AZBio and the Bioindustry Organization of Southern Arizona as well as Arizona’s Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee.

Promotions

Paul Karnatz was promoted by United Fire Equipment Co. to service manager. With this new role he will take on the overall responsibility for both the portables and the systems departments. Karnatz was previously the portables department manager. He has been with the company since July 2007.

Retirement

Gail Gurney is stepping down as the CEO of the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council. She will step down Jan. 31. Gurney was appointed to CEO in 1992. She also serves as ex officio member of the board. An internal succession planning committee has been formed by the Board of Directors to facilitate the search effort.
